Screen Door

As many people know, Portland is quickly becoming one of the best cities to fall in love with locally owned restaurants.  Screen Door is my new favorite love.  While the name might make you disappointed to find that you are not greeted by a screen door when you enter the charming restaurant, trust me, this will be you only disappointment.  The menu at the Screen Door serves up brunch and dinner, and is focused on southern items, all made fresh with local northwest ingredients.

For breakfast you can choose from a number of delicious scrambles made with either potatoes or cheddar grits (my father is especially fond of the cajun scramble with grits), biscuits and gravy, you can build your own plate, and my personal favorite (at least to watch come out of the kitchen), a waffle served stacked high with delicious fried chicken, skewered together with a big knife.

Dinner is an assortment of all things southern.  As any good southern restaurant would have, they have a delicious hand-breaded buttermilk fried chicken, suculent bbq’d beef brisket, creole jambalya (my husband’s favorite) along with other delicious sandwiches and salads to choose from.  While I have not tried the dessert myself, my cousin raves that they have the best pie he’s ever had.

Trully, the Screen Door is a restaurant that you visit many times, and often, in order to fully appreciate.  The Screen Door is located on the corner of East Burnside & NE 24th in Portland, Oregon.

Screen Door 5 out of 5 on the “yummy goodness” scale
